Welcome to Deda

So, you're dead. Sucks!

Except you might not feel dead—after what feels like a long brush with dreamless sleep, you wake up in a quaint hole: a coffin in an uncovered grave, blanketed in fog. Entombed with you are any personal items (unless they're trial evidence, sorry), and a strange feeling of... lightness? Whatever corruption was in your blood seems to have cleared away with your death, and your injuries are healed, besides any cool scars and lingering aches.

Once you make your way out, a quiet, verdant graveyard (literal) awaits you. You could take a look around the various locations, but the same fog that greeted you surrounds this place, keeping you from venturing too far outside of the town limits.

Still, you may as well get yourself situated. You're not done yet.

Welcome to the graveyard! Here's a quick primer:

You are dead. However, characters are healed of their critical injuries; they may keep any scars or lingering pains that you like. Additionally, they are no longer corrupted. The monstrous force inside you has subsided; this means characters will no longer have powers, etc.

● Setting ● The graveyard has the overall look and feel of a small New England town from the '90s; characters can travel any of the Graveyard Locations, fenced in by fog and forests. But the fog makes this place otherworldly, and strangely permeable. Maybe you can influence your surroundings?

● Living Watch ● Where there are screens, you can view the living side. This includes televisions at the bar, Heaven's Night, and in the apartment lobby—you may even spot a passing glimpse of them in a mirror or glass of water. Only public gatherings like mingles, trial, etc, can be seen and heard this way.

● Items ● Personal inventory transfers over to the graveyard, including items that may be stolen during trial. The only items that stay on the living side are ones that are voluntarily given away. Thursday victims will receive their items in their rooms on Sunday, after Execution. Those who arrive any other day will have their items in their grave with them.

● Injuries and Death ● Characters can still be injured and die here. While characters do not stay dead, please let the mods know if it does happen, so we can inform you of how it works.

● Audiences ● You can audience Death in person, but none of the other NPCs are currently available. You can ignore the note section and go to the apartment penthouse directly to visit, or meet him wherever.

● Effects and Events ● Weekly effects still hit the graveyard, and you may use items on the living unless otherwise noted. Mini-events will go up at the same time as their living counterparts. CYOAs are still available for our sweet deda.

● OOC Notes ● Alluding to the fact that the graveyard exists OOCly is okay, but please keep details of what it looks like, what happens here, plot, et cetera, to yourselves. Feel free to ask the mods if you're not sure about anything!

[ WELL... AVENTURINE IS HERE NOW...

He'd been exploring for some undisclosed amount of time, not looking too deeply at anything and more just trying to discover if there are signs of life besides himself. Considering the fact that the last time he'd awoken in a strange village, he'd been surrounded by almost 40 others, everything feels so much more eerily still and empty in this place in comparison.

For now, he's settled in the bar for a rest. There's no drink in front of him, and his usual smile has been wiped from his face, but his gaze occasionally travels up to the television screen across from him. ]

[wolftonic]

[ shortly before trial, the door to the bar opens, squeaking to an abrupt stop when he sees aventurine. there is a long pause. they have to walk with a makeshift cane that's like, a tire iron, so they're slow to wobble over. ]

...What are you doing here.

[ ??????? ]

[ the sky above him is white when boothill wakes up. in his periphery, he sees the brown edges of coffin and whatever burial hole he was left in. he can distantly hear himself rapidly catching his breath. his hands are holding his cowboy's hat over his chest.

for the first time in the longest week of his life, boothill is clear-headed. there are no shocks of violent thoughts or bloodthirst—there's just a roiling mess of memories, all of what happened the past few days. he wasn't entirely himself, but he was still awake through all of the awful things he'd done. he still experienced them as himself, hearing himself lie to people he purportedly cared about.

but boothill is alive now, somehow. his parts are back together, and all of him is in perfect working condition. his pats his thigh and feels the revolver in his holster. touching it brings up a queasy, guilty feeling. he refrains from touching it again for now.

he gets himself up in a confused daze and finally climbs out of the burial hole. as he wanders into the town, he looks for other people and peeks into various buildings. he goes into one end of the fog endlessly and then back into the eerily quiet, seemingly empty town.

finally he walks into the middle of it, in front of the fountain, and gives the loudest whistle ever. ]

1. HEAVEN'S NIGHT

[ where he will be for most of the week! sitting at the bar furthest from the door and across from the stripper pole, drinking peaty malts or drinks as common as dirt that he pulled from behind the bar or in the convenience store.

he'll be watching the grainy feed above the bar, but his face softens as a few particulars pass the screen.

if it's tuesday, he's watching the group picnic happening, which seems pleasant enough despite the circumstances of last week. he's lost in focus when the screen shows karlach in her green dress. at least she seems like her silly, happy self somehow. he murmurs: ]

Gotta be some catch to all this.

2. JUST CATS

[ boothill NEEDS to pet cats.

or maybe he doesn't. he doesn't know. he's just sitting outside of the cat shop. he's spread an outrageously soft, pawprint-patterned blanket over his lap, where there are cats sleeping in several spots. (if he didn't have this, there's no way the cats would go near him. he's too cold and metaly.)

there's also a case of beer next to him, some of them already uncapped and empty. he raises one to you, his other hand buried in soft fur.

it's not helping his problem. ]

...Something's not right.

● The World Turns ● Over in Lakeside Park, one of the trees has started to split open, a door ripped into its bark. Just like with the living side, it allows access to a strange world: a sunny field with an old solar effigy. While there are a number of long-abandoned ceremonial pyres and circles burned permanently into the grass, there's also a tome at the heart of the effigy, on a charmingly hand-hewn lectern of wood and sticks.

However, the air is tense. The atmosphere is openly hostile and flowers grow in overabundance, breathing out poison and reaching with vines that try to squeeze limbs and break under skin. Characters attempting to approach the tome will find themselves afflicted in two ways: first, they will be intensely connected; they will share panic, emotions, and pain. Secondly, they will be tripping absolute balls. Just the worst acid trip of your life.

This temple will be protecting the tome above all else, so it's clearly the treasure to grab here. i don't know why i'm writing this like there's more than 2.5 people here but basically doing at least one thread where you get this tome is mission complete

● Meanwhile, Back Home ● After whatever the hell that was, there's blankets and soup! It's comforting and probably not full of whatever weird shit that the living are doing to their stew. Death, meanwhile, is looking over the tome that presumably everyone did not die retrieving:

"There's some sort of lock on it."

In order to break the lock, it seems there is a fantastical rune puzzle to fill out. There are little mosaic block pictures of everyone to sort into the puzzle. Curious... it seems you have to fill out this mystical chart...

"...Could it really be this stupid?"

[ It's kind of hard to remember that the tome is the target when Aventurine is tripping mad fucking balls. He's planted himself down in the grass and there are vines creeping along his legs, but he can't care about that right now because why is the skin melting from his hands??

He blinks, a slow-growing panic barely registering in his head, and then the skin returns over his hands. What the heck.

[When Erin opens her eyes and finds herself still conscious, she's not really surprised about that. She expected something like this, really. First thing she does is touch her ears, and finds no fins here!]

Okay, no fins, and no murderous desires. So far this is all pros and no cons.

No demons, above there's no ethereal membrane...

[She sees the demonic sword and sighs, frustrated]

I'm not picking that up.

[Erin crawls of her coffin, sans sword. For someone who died after a whole lot of anger and stuff, she seems pretty alright]

[ Pickles drops a wrapped candy next to Erin. It tastes like strawberries. He also goes to pick up the demonic sword. His now? ]

[ after everyone is cozy in the graveyard and has had a moment to gather their bearings, collect their items, etc, Death is available at the fountain. ]

The tome from Wednesday's finally unlocked. Take a look.

[ this information is free for all of you to discuss, and a transcript will be available at the apartment building for any future reference: ]

The tome retrieved during Wednesday's excursion is full of empty and damaged pages, writing long worn away or destroyed by time and mites. But one page remains in somewhat readable state: an excerpt from an entry, which outlines the summoning process of a near-forgotten god.

There are mentions of two possible ingredients that were to be used in the ritual. One is crossed out, though the details are impossible to make out for either, besides the mention of a leg. At the end, there is a partially worn description of the results:

"...was astronomical, but I was finally able to see it. In return for the gift I offered, it rose above us, towering, and I wept. My god! My savior! You arrived."

● THE WORLD TURNS ● Over in Lakeside Park, one of the trees has started to split open, a door ripped into its bark. Just like with the living side, it allows access to a strange world: a series of seemingly endless hallways upon hallways, rooms upon rooms, mostly coated in the same, yellow wallpaper. Something about it drives you a little mad if you gaze at it too long; the pattern always forms shapes that unnerve you.

In one of the rooms, any room, there is a tome set on a wooden desk. A tinny radio sits there, playing back a news report of your death in excruciating detail, reminding you of your failings and shortcomings, the grisly details and emotions you may have kept hidden. Or if you're a dirty killer, the radio might report on a wanted fugitive, and explain what awful things you've done to other people here. The tome seems to vanish between rooms, and turning off the radio in one room only starts to play it in another.

The longer you aimlessly explore, the more contorted and claustrophobic the space feels. Writing on the walls points you one way, then another; there is graffiti like DON'T MOVE, STAY STILL or BE QUIET that you will feel compelled to listen to; for these examples, your legs may turn numb or your voice quiet, but any text will have a similar effect. There is also spray paint, in case you would like to test painting 'warnings' yourself, which will do the same thing. Ignoring it means you might just be attacked by... skin snatchers again! But you can use your SCP monster of choice as well.

OOC Note: Don't worry about who specifically brings the book back, we all live in wobbly RP timelines here.

● Back Home ● After whatever the hell that was, characters can recoup for a moment at the mall. The cats are around to comfort you and to be adorable and probably steal your things.

Death, meanwhile, is looking over the tome that presumably everyone did not die retrieving:

In order to break the lock, it seems there is... another fantastical rune puzzle! Just in time for retail horror week? Engaging with these Arcane Magicks (or avoiding them, either way) may curse you into blurting out constructive criticism of your coworkers (other characters), compel you to clean things and tidy people up, or make you feel that you'll fail your next 1on1, whatever that means.

The radio isn't being nice at Erin, which is deserved, really. It's recounting things she did, including reading out loud the articles that appeared -- both the one about Daan being awarded the sad man prize and the one messing with Gale -- as well as stating she sowed discord in the theater by opening up debate about who to crown as the king of clowns. References to her murder of Karma are peppered as well, because of course.

Erin seems more annoyed than anything else, taking the radio to look for the off button]

Great, expose me more. The exposer becomes the exposed. As if I didn't have enough things going on my plate already.

BREAK-IN: LIGHTHOUSE (aventurine, nona)

[ something odd is happening over by the lake. the lighthouse is lit even during the daylight hours, yet goes out in odd, flickering intervals as fog rolls off the lake in sheets of mist.

the actual lighthouse tower is connected to a watch house. the door, which is usually open for visitors, is locked tight.

[ one of the apartment floors is starting to look... strange. the dingy hallway feels even dingier, the carpet replaced with what looks like rusting metal.

while all the doors are usually locked, one seems especially so, with a board nailed over it.

aventurine and nona are stumbling out of the lighthouse, the latter doing her best to support the former—who seems kind of catatonic, honestly. nona's got a bleeding scratch on her face, but aventurine looks even worse, his arm visibly bloody for one. yikes!

Week 2 Thursday

[Well things happened indeed.

Erin is all of a sudden outside of the apartment building. She looks like she went through hell, really -- her shoulder is viscous and burned, enough for the fabric of whatever she had been wearing corroded enough to show what's underneath. What's there is not pretty at all, that's for sure.

Her hands, too, are bleeding profusely, cut from trying to deal with some ribs that killed Karma, in addition to one of them looking like it has the texture of old parchment with a very ugly blackish color. That's how dried up from burning it got from evil goop.

Erin stands there, looking up. She's...not really calling out for anyone. She just is really tired right now, and not just physically]

[tactic]

[ What timing. Aventurine is on his way back to the apartment, his arms and hands bandaged, when he spots a familiar face. ]

Erin...?

[ And then his eyes go wide at seeing her injuries. He hurries over, hovering a hand over her shoulder in concern. ]

What happened to you?

[ It's late thursday night, and the dirt in the graveyard shifts as a figure slowly sits up from inside a shallow grave. Even as he struggles to stand, dirt falling off his hair and shoulders in clumps, darkness continues to cling to him in the form of cursed burns and clotting blood, in stiff and painful movements, a dragging foot, breath that comes out shallow and harsh.

and then anybody watching can see him stumble against a broken gravestone and proceed to fall face first into another open grave back where he belongs. ]

Karma is actually doing this, just fyi, it's later in the evening after the newly dead have settled but he can't sleep so therefore nobody else is allowed to sleep either. ]

[ once everybody is gathered in one of the classroom/Karma finishes manhandling anybody trying to resist, he sets a poster sized chart down on a pair of desks shoved together in lieu of a proper table. Everybody's names are written down on separate slips of paper, and there are pens in a cup for people to fill in the blanks. ]

I know some of you [ looks at Aerith ] have been able to figure out who has been possessed by what monster. I want a complete chart- or as close to it as we can- by the end of the week.
