anyway nothing says familiarity like being called a dumbass for doing things like a dumbass. wow!!! rondo behavior. he looks at the book, tilting his head to the side a little bit like an owl to look at it... whoa ]
You guys really like to surprise us, huh... I should've been more ready! [ oopsies. ] This is the kind of thing you like to read, Famine? Why'd you pick this one?
[ proceeds to not do that. he will thumb through the pages though. his own book, which appears to be some kind of history book, lays abandoned upon his foot. ]
You're one of the people that's from somewhere more modern, to study something like this... are you a scientist, too? If it weren't for seeing people's memories, I might never have even heard of the term 'genetics' before.
Do we do bloodletting...? I guess that's a better question for Alfyn...
[ like the prayer he'll give you. fair enough. they do in fact pray for healing.
rondo blinks at the second bit, though. ]
...No? [ the look on rondo's face says 'was that personal' ] Is it? I mean, it's never too late to get to know someone. Besides! Last week everyone's memories were all over the place... so... this week means if you get to know someone you haven't talked to before, it's through conversation, not through having it forced! That's kind of nice.
Oh, that's okay. I won't tell you a bunch of personal things about me or anything if you don't want to learn about them. Sir Sazantos would say the same thing.
[ teflon. rubber. bouncy.
he looks thoughtful for a minute, looking at the book... ]
... If I study this, could I come to you and ask questions about the content?
[ there's a pause as he looks more thoughtful, seeming to come to sort of conclusion... and then he nods, lifting his head up from the title. clear eyed and determined and - serious. ]
...Then, can I ask you to recommend me a few more texts on a similar topic? I'd like to be able to teach myself properly, and I don't want to end up with a short-sighted view of it.
[ unfortunately for famine this is exactly the kind of thing that rondo responds to ]
Isn't this still putting more work on me... [ but they'll think about it for a moment and turn ] Fine. Only since I was going back to that section anyway.
[ not this dog behavior.... famine will just ignore that and keep walking, bringing them closer to the medical tomes. that said, when they hand him another one—this one on healing magic—they just say: ]
Make yourself useful and hold this for me.
[ they don't want to be bothered but also.... lazy ]
he nods and immediately holds out the other book so they can stack it on top! all of these muscles are really good for holding things. it's actually kind of nice? this is like settling into a very, very familiar routine. ]
Yes, sir. [ (gender neutral) ] Should I keep two stacks, or just one? I can hold any that you want to keep for yourself separately.
[ he readjusts his hands to hold out both! healing magic book in the left hand, genetics book in the right. holding them flat like pizza pies. he's being so good and not chatty. this takes a lot of personal restraint. ]
[ impressive.... famine will just start to put out the two stacks then. rondo gets basic medical texts, often rooted more in science and technology rather than magic.
famine's stack is in a similar vein, but it gets into more magical-type diseases and cures. less STEM and more rituals.
admittedly sometimes they will get distracted, pulling a book out and flipping through the pages. they start to get distracted on one, standing there... for a few minutes... just reading.... like they've forgotten rondo
[ i truly cannot express to you how normal this is including the part where he's being ignored
it gives rondo a second to observe the books themselves. magic for famine, stem for him.... filling in the blanks of knowledge, is it? that makes sense. so, famine must be from somewhere much more modern to not be so familiar with the magical...
this is how it was at home, too - he's learned really well to pick up on skills just by watching and trying to deconstruct. he holds the books and patiently waits for like.
a solid five minutes of reading. do they keep going. ]
he is definitely peeking at what they might be referring to, but otherwise goes back to being an excellent book holder, craning his neck to look. and at the question! rondo thinks about it for a moment, tilting his head from side to side. ]
Hmm...I like both, but I think hands on is the best. I adore books, but I usually have to take stringent notes to make sure I remember everything - it comes more naturally if I can learn by doing, if that makes sense.
Haha, yes. [ HE DOESN'T EVEN DISAGREE ] People have been surprised when I told them I liked to read, this week...
[ (zia voice) rondo is literate?
it takes him a second to process what they're asking, but the lightbulb goes off, and he brightens, then nods, expression very serious like this is the most serious task in the world. ]
I will - thank you, Famine. [ he's going to LEARN ] With this, if I can master it, I can finally help out Mr. Daan for everything he's done for us in the cabin so far.
[ it is admittedly a pretty serious task, famine is just like 'don't fuck it up' ]
Don't expect to master it in a few days. Focus on what's most practical. Stitching up wounds with a controlled hand and providing tourniquets so that they don't bleed out is the primary goal.
Wound care and cleaning to avoid infections is after that.
[ like he is committing that to memory, murmured quietly to himself. okay. ]
Tourniquets - those create pressure to stem bleeding, right? And stitches... I could ask Mr. Daan to see if he has any extra supplies... [ thinking, thinking.... what's the most logical way to do this?
got it! off goes the lightbulb. ]
I think - I want to focus on tourniquets, first. I can practice those before Thursday, and in the meantime, I can study up on the proper application of stitches, so we don't end up wasting any precious medical supplies. And maybe - once I feel like I understand the actual act, maybe I can find something to practice with.
[ plan!!!! he has a plan. ]
Okay. [ ... ] I... if you needed it, I don't know what I could share, but, I do have some experience with the practical application of healing magic. I'm not a cleric, but I can do some. If a lived experience would be helpful with your research, Famine.
