It's a dress code for everyone, to try to protect identities within the cult. Obviously, it is fine if people unmask for each other in private, which is why they didn't expect the four of us to keep our identities a secret from each other.
But since you guys aren't members, we're not really supposed to reveal anything to you guys.
... well, part of it really is curiosity. I know that between the four of us, I seem like the outlier, but we're all really similar in certain ways. We want to learn. Find information. See what's out there.

I joined because the cult approached me, and promised things that sounded crazy, but they also presented me with proof that was not logically possible where I'm from, yet definitely real. I was curious. I wanted to see how much truth there was in what they were claiming, and if this god of theirs was real or not. If the power they were promising could actually help, or if it was something that needed to be dealt with and destroyed. But the only way to find that out was to follow them.
