...A wish isn't nothing. A stronger power might help you in this situation. From that perspective, for instance, the question becomes: is there something you want badly enough in this world or your own that you might die for it? Your partner would have to agree to that risk, but you could be stronger for sharing that conviction.
Alternatively, if you aren't very attached to life. If death isn't a fear of yours, it becomes an easier choice.
But if you don't want to rely on another person, or don't trust them, then you can ignore the tether. It hasn't become too bothersome, I imagine.
