Typically warmer! Sub-tropical is best, really, since they get killed easily in the cold. The temperature here luckily doesn't fluctuate too much so I can make do, but I'm not sure if this be sustainable...

That's true. Plants are very easily killable. You just pluck some in the wrong temperature, or overwater, and bam! There they go.
