It is optional. Another way to obtain some rewards for those who have lost their unofficial partner.

If you both have formed a bond already, this would not apply to either of you. However, should your partner be killed without the two of you bonding, this would allow you to continue reaping the benefits, so long as the other party is unattached and willing.
