It's pretty normal with work like that. You don't hire someone for a job and pay them before it's done when you've got no guarantee they'll do it.

Most of the people I get jobs from probably can't afford a down payment.

Pretty much anything people need done. Getting rid of fiends, wrangling up kids or animals, finding lost items or getting materials people can't get to, being a bodyguard... [ he shrugs. whatever the side quests god decide. ] Almost everything on that list of skills seemed based off a job I've taken.

[ sometimes the sidequest is turning into a frog to play leap frog with children. he doesn't share that ]

[ it is what they're doing but it always feels wild to hear saving the world out loud ]

Yeah. I pick up odd jobs in the place we go to.

Do the others work?

Yeah, they help out with jobs sometimes. Usually whatever catches their interest or when we go off fighting monsters.

Yeah. There's... eight of us total, plus our pilot.

You really did not seem like the type who would hang out with large groups.

... We didn't start off as a large group?

Tifa's a friend of mine from childhood. Her group needed some extra muscle for something they wanted to do, so she convinced Barret to hire me for a gig. Things kind of... ballooned from there.

Yeah. Aerith's been with us longer than Yuffie. I fell through the roof of her church into her flowers after my second gig got... complications. Then she got in trouble because of us, so we got her out of it. That's when Red joined up.

Then we ran into Yuffie a couple of times until she basically begged to come along.
