It's less the ritual and more that the place we are in changes frequently, so it was most likely it reacting to what was going on. So the ritual did cause it in a sense, by occurring there, but it wasn't the ritual that made that happen. If we held the ritual in any other location, something else bonkers would have happened.

I wouldn't say alive in the sense that it's like, sentient and breathing... but the magic that made it is always shifting.
