Spellwork where I'm from typically utilizes some sort of component. Not always, but there are usually materials which are consumed by the spell when it is cast.
Think that nasty cult is aiming to do something like that ritual? I was thinking the reason why monsters were being constantly summoned was to use their body parts for this.
