[ yayyy nona and her pet slug. way better than geto's horror worm.
the bodies don't all look like beasts, but burning is indiscriminate. fire burns through any sort of person.
they can go to the church together though, where there is some active burning going on—the air is rife with particulates, tiny specks of what looks like white dust. ashen, bloodless corpses sit in pyres. the vibes are just as bad as before, and the church does not seem quite like sanctuary, but there's not many other directions to go; gojo can take note that there is an exit, but they're moving further away from it, and it was gated off. the moon is pale, and hidden in daylight still, as waning as it may be.
otherwise, there is nothing barring their way to the church. inside, it is quiet—everything in this city is quiet, because it is dead. it makes your skin itch, this stillness, where something should be holy. there is still some semblance of divinity though, because there are empty pews and an altar up ahead.
also, there is something like a massive, massive chandelier, except it is... flesh. a monster, turned inside out and hanging there. its blood drips along the floor, near any visitors that venture inside. it is practically unavoidable to get dripped on. ]
Yes, so many things I don't want close to me. Like corpses and strange insects we find on those corpses. I'm very picky.
[vin don't be sassy. anyways!! here we are at the church with our new friend the flesh chandelier. the overwhelming quiet makes her even more on edge than she normally does, not to mention the sight they see as they come in.
as they unavoidably get dripped on:]
Disgusting.
[if she heads towards the altar, will she see anything notable?]
[The sassiness makes Erin laugh, genuinely amused]
Guess that means you'll live a long and safe life. Congratulations.
[Someone with that level of paranoia is probably bound to not put herself in unnecessary danger, unlike Erin, really.
The inside of the church is...abhorrent. Erin whispers to herself:]
Ugh, this place is the worst nightmare of a germaphobic.
[Good thing she isn't one! Erin is staring at the pews, looking out for anything that might be slithering among those. With some luck the fire got rid of all things dangerous, but also...that monster up there is too fresh and not burned. There clearly is something going on in this city]
[FLESH MONSTER CHANDELIER WHY. on reflex, nona points the bow up towards it, eyeing it to make sure it's dead. the slug is resting on her shoulder or something.]
Ugh, gross, gross, gross...
[but then she pauses by the entrance, as she lets out a shiver.]
[ vin is handling this like a champ. she can go up to the altar—on it is a fancy gold chalice, filled with what looks like... more blood! this place follows a specific aesthetic for sure. she may take it if she wants, it's the only object here.
erin can find a holy book in the pews, with another note. maybe she has a bonus to finding these things given her background:
"...Together with the left behind Great One, they look to the skies, in search of astral signs, that may lead them to the rediscovery of true greatness..."
the flesh chandelier beast does not move.
is the blood cold? it's (kind of) fresh blood. most would find it warm and sticky. the chandelier itself is... grotesque to look upon, with its exposed ligatures and bone, but it almost seems less like a fixture and more like something left up to there for bloodletting. it may be possible to bring it down—as a reminder, all of you were given the choice to bring a gun, and there are various rafters and whatnot to climb. otherwise, there is the courtyard still. ]
[yeah she absolutely takes the blood and drinks it all. no, she leaves it there with a wrinkle of her nose and takes a step back. after a moment of looking up at the creature and taking in the placement, there's an unhappy sigh, before:]
...If this is some kind of blood ritual, we should probably try to stop it. There' a goblet filled with blood up here. I wonder if bringing this thing down would interrupt it.
[so she's going to start climbing one of the rafters, so she can at least get a better look at the monster up there.]
[Oh, more information! Erin sees the book and hurries to get it, examining it with interest, then reading the relevant part aloud for everyone's benefit:]
"...Together with the left behind Great One, they look to the skies, in search of astral signs, that may lead them to the rediscovery of true greatness..."
[......]
I had enough of deities and rituals for a lifetime!
[Looking at Vin:]
Is contaminating that goblet's contents an option? If not moving it then making it unusable could work.
[Not that she's sure how to do that. Her immediate thought was to gather three or four handfuls of dust and shove them into the goblet but is that really going to be enough to contaminate it?]
I heard a whisper...? Something like "hunters aren't wanted here."
[she watches vin worriedly, still with her bow ready in case the monster COMES TO LIFE or something. but she will slowly start backing up towards the courtyard to take a look there.]
I'm also not a fan of rituals. I don't see why not give it a try. What's stopping us from trying more methods, anyway?
[ He says... Disgruntled by their predicament, but lingering long enough to catch some more drizzling on his dress. He gets himself to move out from underneath the chandelier to look at the rest of the church.
Since there are eyes on the courtyard, what can we say about the architecture of this place? Does it tell a story beyond the blood and the ominous ritual? ]
Definitely did not hear that. That sounds like a warning.
[ the architecture: the church itself is high-raftered, and in its own way, hauntingly beautiful. it looks a little grander and holier than the rest of the city, and rather than an occult ritual, the chalice absent of blood would seem more like communion. there are statues of saints with upturned faces, viewing some unknown divinity, as well as some that look like this.
outside, the burning bodies seem like they just go on forever. like a flame that doesn't go out. they release a white smoke, and the longer that nona spends out there, the more faint she feels. it gives her a headache.
does erin attempt to contaminate the communion goblet?
as for vin, since she's spry, she can get up the rafters to see the monster that's been skewered up here. its face is sunken, hidden beneath its own upturned skin, but is almost... humanoid. this was a person once. it is huge with bursts of fur visible, and claws the length of full knives. it is hung up with chains, like so. ]
I didn't hear a whisper, but - good luck with the goblet.
[as for the monster... gross!
she looks at it with a mixture of disgust and sympathy - it's awful to look at, but if it was once human... she sighs, looking to see if there's a way she can get to the weak points of the chains to bring it down somehow.]
I didn't hear any whisper either -- but given how burned everything is and that there were beasts and all that, I doubt anything is welcome in this city.
[........
Well, seems like others agree that disrupting this might be for the best.
Truthfully, the fact there's blood involved combined with the ruinous atmosphere combined with the half-transformed person makes her not notice the fact this all might be holy in nature. Erin grabs a handful of dust and detritus off the floor]
Okay, everyone, I'm about to try to disrupt whatever's going on with this.
[And she will attempt to pour dust into the goblet's contents, to contaminate it. However, there's a certain nervousness to this, which is why she approaches her arm slowly, it trembling a little.
It's slow enough that if anyone thinks this is a bad idea, they can stop her. If nobody does, she'll pour this into the goblet]
[nona is too busy outside to pay attention to erin right now, as the smoke makes her light-headed. she presses a hand to her forehead, trying to concentrate and frowning further.
edges back inside]
Um... I'm hearing more things. Can't really make it out this time, though... Is it just me? Oh no, I"m losing it...
Just keep calm, Nona! But if the whispers are telling you important things, tell us.
[ Don't worry! Thumbs up! Thumbs up to Erin, too! He isn't going to stop it and he also doesn't know what could be the consequences of contaminating ritual blood.
For the hanging monster, are the chains connected to a pulley for or something? He will check the statues out closer, but every once in a while look at the hanging monster and Vin. ]
the monster is not on a pulley, maybe just ineffectually hauled up there from the rafters. however, the chains look quite old despite how 'fresh' the corpse seems, and vin can start knocking them down quite easily. they do lash and whip, so be careful not to get hit by them, it'll still hurt. this would probably take a while, but it'll work.
however, they're in luck: when erin contaminates the chalice's pure blood, it starts to bubble. thick, nearly opaque bubbles of blood rise to its surface, almost immediately turning black and splashing like a thick ooze with a strange sizzle as the blood starts to fade away.
vin's work becomes easy then. because the monster very suddenly wakes, lashing from its restraints with a scream that fills the entire church. it rips violently at its chains, apparently seeking to bring vin down with it—and down it will go, straight onto the church floor with an enormous crash of dust.
for the record, this thing is big. even on all fours, it stands taller than gojo and is many times larger overall. it feels no pain and recovers in an instant to lash at anyone within its reach with its knife hands, including vin, who it just pulled down from the rafters. ]
she doesn't notice what's going on with the chalice, though she'd said she didn't mind erin trying to interfere with it. that might change in ten seconds when it brings the monster to life. she freezes wherever she's working on the chains, trying in vain to scale away from the monster, but it's not quick enough.
i rolled a two so she absolutely eats shit as it pulls her down. time to get knife handed!!]
[Erin can't tell what was the direct cause of the monster's revival -- if the contaminated ritual or Vin getting too close to the monster while up there -- but what happened to the goblet...well it sure was something! She hopes she didn't just doom herself to a lifetime of curses.
Erin draws her weapon, ready to attack and potentially clean up the mess she caused! Good thing about her weapon, it has range!
Not so good thing, I rolled a 4, so that's not going to be a fantastic attack, is it]
[nona yells out in concern because hello??? she runs over to vin to try and help her, though not without firing at the monster with her bow. unfortunately i also rolled a 4 we're doing great gojo save us]
[ No time to elaborate on the mistiming of everything because Vin is going down with the monster and it's MASSIVE. Satoru pulls out his katana and goes for a quick slash, specifically at the wrist or the elbow joint of the knifehand closest to Vin. It won't save her from whatever 2 destruction she's going to get, but...
who can say what woke it from its slumber in the end? maybe it would've woken up regardless. anyway, vin goes down. she gets sliced up, badly. this thing practically has blades for fingers, and it with rake them down her body with unmatched viciousness. all of you can see, and in vin's case feel: this is a grievous injury.
however, gojo (and pretty much only gojo sorry everyone) manages to get it to at least flinch, the katana biting through part of its wrist until it hits a bone that's too hard to clear. so the others may have time to help her recover.
from one blow, and the following frenzy of flapping skin and fur and shrieking malice, it is clear this creature is—powerful. and it wants all of them dead. it has no blood, and yet something spills out from its cut wrist as it attacks again at anyone near it. ]
[she's swearing off parkouring up to huge terrifying monsters for the next ten years thanks
she cries out in pain as the blades cut into her, digging in and dragging down hard from her head to her legs. there's a pretty severe amount of blood coming from her wounds, and she doesn't manage to attack. her focus now is to try and move away from the assailant, slowly and weakly as the wounds continue to seep a worrying amount.
oh yeah i rolled a fourteen for crawling away i guess give her a second]
[Vin is moving away. Erin tries to call the monster's attention away from Vin]
Stop that!
[She shouted that without thinking much. She just saw someone crawling and bleeding, and thought even just a moment of distraction could be of help. Still, Erin doubts a mere shout will redirect this thing's anger.
Which is why she attempts to slash at the closest arm of the creature. It probably isn't the same one Gojo hit, and since the monster is so big, at best she can aim at its wrist.
[VIN!! nona does her best to get between her and the monster, switching her weapon to its blade form as she tries to parry against the monster's attack. except oops i rolled a 6]
