Most people aren't. I'm more shocked when people do volunteer for clinical trials, but I assume it comes with some level of desperation. Or a savior complex.
Do not misunderstand. Proper medical trials minimize risk wherever possible, but that is part of what makes them tests. It is the risk that volunteers take knowingly, and while they are often cured, it is impossible to save every life—even with complete intention to.
