I think you enjoy having someone to take care of. But you're in good company with others here for that.
[ this is so rich coming from scien. but the irony is that he's taken in so many of these people because he's the one single person no one feels like they have to look after ]
[If his ass didn't get hit by the Catholic Guilt bat so hard he'd be in a similar boat but unfortunately he showed how fragile he is to the graveyard very quickly... Now too many people fuss over him and it drives him up a wall. Sasuga Scien, though. Carrying on his general position even in murdertown.
He clicks another piece into place.]
It could apply both in terms of other people who enjoy the same, and people who desperately need to be looked after...
[ literally no one has ever seen scien fall apart because it's just something that doesn't happen. he clicks another piece into place and says with some small thoughtfulness ]
I do not relate to either side.
[ he doesn't like looking after people, he just does
and he definitely is self-sufficient except in feeding himself,, ]
I don't think it would make that much of a difference, ultimately...
[Everyone is already such a fucking mess... But!! He just looks over the remaining spaces and nods, humming in agreement. Glancing over at local puzzle freak Scien Brofiise. This is still so wild to see the local demon lord get so genuinely excited over puzzles.]
Only a bit more to go... It feels like we've been working on it for a while. [IT'S BEEN HOURS. Clicks another piece or two into place.]
[He wants so badly to just be like WHY DO YOU LAUGH LIKE THAT but he'll settle for just casting the occasional glance across the table like what the wholeass hell you fuckin bozo.]
It does look nice...
[It will look BETTER when it's FINISHED. He seems a little surprised by that, though.]
Oh? They do take a while, if this is anything to go by. It's a bit surprising you can spend so much time on one without returning to your other work, really.
[Thinking about the favoritism of just scolding Dahut for throwing away some puzzle pieces when he wholeass fired Ceres for putting a book in the wrong place.]
[The way he opens his mouth reflexively to fuss but it makes his brainworms itch so he just closes his mouth again...
Also clicks another piece into place. They will soon be free. He ignores the last sentence entirely even though it's objectively hilarious to be lumped in together with Scien's other love: puzzles.]
How do you manage that? [Says Lucas who also probably often goes without sleep.] Is it just habit...?
[GOD. Scien really just keeps saying shit that highlights the fact that he is not, in fact, a demon without even meaning to.
This sits too uncomfortably for him to address directly just yet, so instead he just says:]
Most people would start to hallucinate after only a few days without sleep, and memory degrades fairly quickly, too... [Why does he know this.] Is it not that way for you? Even near the end?
Maybe toward the end... I do end up getting sleepy after a few days without sleep, but it's not enough to affect my mind that rest is necessary until it's been about a week.
[Scien just being a freak is par for the course... There's a reflexive twinge of brainworm anger at the flippancy of LIFE AND DEATH but then he recalls that this should theoretically not be a thing anymore.]
What happens if your body reaches a point where it can't handle more?
scien will just roll his eyes because lucas is so stupid (endeared). but he'll place a few more pieces and in the lapse of silence, he'll eventually say ]
[HE IS TRULY THE BIGGEST BOZO HERE!!!!! And yet he had the audacity to call other people empty headed.]
You don't need to tell me that...
[He wasn't concerned or anything listen here. He almost says he doesn't want to hear it from someone who already died but he decides not to ruin the puzzle vibes.]
I'm clarifying a point. I'm not someone who would go back on my word. And I've given my word to you enough times that I'm sure it's starting to get repetitive.
[ it's not about whether or not lucas is worried about him, it's just scien's own ego? but he'll keep puzzling away!! ]
[Said with a little SIGH as if it is so personally trying for him, even though the repetition is the only thing that will drill things into his crazy soup head.
But he glances up at Scien while he is busy puzzling and allows a tiny passing sentiment about how nice it would be to not be left alone.]

Yes, well. That isn't surprising.
[For exactly those reasons. He picks a few more pieces out, looking over the unfinished areas.]
no subject
[ so many busybodies... but scien will just take the pieces that haven't been placed and bring them closer to the middle for both of them to look at.
though as he realizes their progress - ]
We're almost done...
[ he's excited... ]

It looks good. An almost complete portrait.
No one's ever sat through a full puzzle from start to finish with me.

So I don't mind being pulled away for longer than anticipated, if it means having puzzles and you.
[ normally he would put this away by now but so much of his time goes to being with lucas anyway ]
no subject
Also clicks another piece into place. They will soon be free. He ignores the last sentence entirely even though it's objectively hilarious to be lumped in together with Scien's other love: puzzles.]
How do you manage that? [Says Lucas who also probably often goes without sleep.] Is it just habit...?
no subject
Habit. In the Institute, anyone who had lives depending on them was worked hard. With that logic, I should be working the hardest out of everyone.
When time to rebuild the country came, my workload only increased so I pushed my record from 17 days without sleep to 20.

This sits too uncomfortably for him to address directly just yet, so instead he just says:]

no subject
Have you been getting enough sleep?
no subject
[Scien.......... Why are you such a freak. He places another piece.]
But I do sleep every night, yes, as most people do.
[HE'S NOT ABNORMAL except for when he's out murdering people and then going to teach classes the next day. Drugs probably also help with that.]
no subject
he'll also place another piece ]
That's good. It's reasonable to get rest so the body doesn't face adverse health effects.
[ is he listening to himself ]
no subject
Does your body not experience those adverse health effects...?
[The vibe of like (narrows eyes) demon relivers? but a bit milder because he's in a chill puzzling mood.]
no subject
[ demon reliver but it's just scien being a freak ]
As long as my results aren't compromised, it's not a great concern what happens to my body.
no subject
What happens if your body reaches a point where it can't handle more?
no subject
I die?
no subject
The way this makes his brainworms happy but the rest of him angry and that's such an unusual combo that he just ends up feeling confused.
Just placing another couple of pieces in silence.]
no subject
scien will just roll his eyes because lucas is so stupid (endeared). but he'll place a few more pieces and in the lapse of silence, he'll eventually say ]
I won't push myself to the point of death.
I won't leave you.

but he'll pick up a puzzle piece and then—pause. it is the last one. it's obvious where it goes.
